This forum and website are coming to an end. « Thread Started on Jan 27, 2007, 5:49pm »
It is with deep regret that I announce the closure of Monty Barker's Website and Monty Barker's Forum.
I simply don't have the time, patience or interest to continue running this place. I am going to college this year and my website will be the least of my concern when I am there.
I have looked through the stats and seen that the amount of hits on both the site and the forum has decreased by 2500% from Spring 2004 through Autumn 2006.
I will also be losing my free webspace from Earthlink this year, as I am moving to another ISP. There are lots of free webspaces around, but then I'd have to promote the site to get people to find it. There really isn't much point.
So I have decided that it is best to bring the website and forum to an end. I will be closing this forum on Tuesday, February 20, 2007. I will close my website on the same date if not sooner.
I have learned so much about web design and programming because of working on this site. With this knowledge, I have been able to design and maintain a website for a local craft shop (http://www.dogwoodcrafts.com), and other web sites are in planning stages.
Before I started this forum in 2003, I had been active on Windows newsgroups. I had a following there, I would hope, and I decided to start my own community to experiment. Unfortunately, I got tied up with this, and stopped going to the newsgroups. I then became active on ProBoards Support. I have been a member there for over 3 years, going almost every day. I have lately ventured onto other, more popular sites to spend my online time, although I will remain on ProBoards Support. If it wasn't for this forum being a ProBoard, I never would have known about ProBoards Support.
I originally started my website in 2001 to experiment with newfound HTML knowledge. I was less than excited about the result, and I didn't promote it for several months. Once I started promoting it, it quickly grew from a two page site to a site with nearly 30 pages.
Even though I am going to close my home on the web, it doesn't mean for a second that I'm going to disappear from the Internet. I am starting to get active on Myspace [profile], where I can have a home on the Internet with almost no maintenance or trouble. I can think of it as renting an apartment vs. owning a house.
If you have any computer questions (and you probably will with Vista coming out this week and all), feel free to email me at montybarker AT gmail DOT com.
What will happen to this place on February 20? I will keep it here, but locked for posting. I may eventually weed out old posts and delete the whole thing at some point. What about my website? I will keep it there until I switch ISPs.
