It's a little late for this, but, you need to surround a link on here with and to make it appear as a whole link.

This forum and website are coming to an end.
« Result #6 on Jan 27, 2007, 5:49pm »

It is with deep regret that I announce the closure of Monty Barker's Website and Monty Barker's Forum.

I simply don't have the time, patience or interest to continue running this place. I am going to college this year and my website will be the least of my concern when I am there.

I have looked through the stats and seen that the amount of hits on both the site and the forum has decreased by 2500% from Spring 2004 through Autumn 2006.

I will also be losing my free webspace from Earthlink this year, as I am moving to another ISP. There are lots of free webspaces around, but then I'd have to promote the site to get people to find it. There really isn't much point.

So I have decided that it is best to bring the website and forum to an end. I will be closing this forum on Tuesday, February 20, 2007. I will close my website on the same date if not sooner.

I have learned so much about web design and programming because of working on this site. With this knowledge, I have been able to design and maintain a website for a local craft shop (http://www.dogwoodcrafts.com), and other web sites are in planning stages.

Before I started this forum in 2003, I had been active on Windows newsgroups. I had a following there, I would hope, and I decided to start my own community to experiment. Unfortunately, I got tied up with this, and stopped going to the newsgroups. I then became active on ProBoards Support. I have been a member there for over 3 years, going almost every day. I have lately ventured onto other, more popular sites to spend my online time, although I will remain on ProBoards Support. If it wasn't for this forum being a ProBoard, I never would have known about ProBoards Support.

I originally started my website in 2001 to experiment with newfound HTML knowledge. I was less than excited about the result, and I didn't promote it for several months. Once I started promoting it, it quickly grew from a two page site to a site with nearly 30 pages.

Even though I am going to close my home on the web, it doesn't mean for a second that I'm going to disappear from the Internet. I am starting to get active on Myspace [profile], where I can have a home on the Internet with almost no maintenance or trouble. I can think of it as renting an apartment vs. owning a house.

If you have any computer questions (and you probably will with Vista coming out this week and all), feel free to email me at montybarker AT gmail DOT com.

What will happen to this place on February 20? I will keep it here, but locked for posting. I may eventually weed out old posts and delete the whole thing at some point. What about my website? I will keep it there until I switch ISPs.

It's been fun.

Sincerely,

Monty Barker

Here you can RP the life of your own creature. Within that life he, or she, could possibly find true love, experience what it's like to have your back stabbed, or back stab someone else! She, or he, could gain friends and enemies along the way. What's best is, if you know a character from your favorite movie, or something, you could bring them to life here!

Packs are gathered, to be thought as similar to governments and stuff. simply people organized in a group, with leaders and such, so that order can fully be established or what have you. (We still need Creatures to claim the packs.) You could own a pack, or maybe have a character challenge for leadership of a pack, if it's already owned.

RP them with a nice little family even, as they learn first hand what it's actually like to be a parent; To have to actually be there for the helpless infants, and raise them up to adult hood. For the faithful, tear jerking day, when they leave the nest, so to speak, and head off for their own adventures to unfold. To never again be watching over them and keeping them completely safe.

Maybe your character could experience having their heart broken. Maybe a character they fall in love with really wasn't their soul mate, as they thought they were. Maybe their mate will split up, leaving them with a shattered heart.

Maybe, though, they could be the one breaking hearts. Making another fall in love with them, and crashing their wonderful fantasy in half. Who knows? Maybe they could do it for the fact that it wasn't working out, or could it be part of that character's personality??

I find that the truly fun part or Role playing is that the character is your own design. You made it up; you bring it to life and have it experience the things it does. You live your life; why not control a life of another. They can have any personality, fall in love...even with many! Or, have many fall in love with them. In real life think of the trouble you get into for killing another, here YOU won't get in trouble. Your character may, if its victim had any loved ones that would want to seek vengeance.

Come give us a try! You never know what fun you could actually have.

Suggestions for GOOD web hosts?
« Result #17 on Oct 21, 2006, 6:16pm »

As you can probably tell from my profile area, my web host has "gone south" :'(, leaving me without any of the customizations, etc. that I had for my own Forum. So I am looking for a good, reliable replacement web host service. And it does not have to be free!

Monty, you obviously have a stable web host for yourself, so I am hoping that you may be able to provide me with a contact URL (or two ... or more!) to speed me on my way.

I thought I had a replacement with GoDaddy.com, but it turns out that acting as a 24/7 resource for filez was against their Terms Of Service. (Found that out after I had purchased a domain name, and paid for 6 months support ... and populated the space with over half of the needed files!)

Bandwidth is not likely to be a problem, and anything above .5GB should do for storage.

Thank you (whoever replies!) for any assistance you may be able to provide to help me get the Forum back on its feet.

Jesus Christ Saves! Accept him as your Savior Now!
« Result #20 on Jul 15, 2006, 7:21pm »

Do you think that you’re a good person?

Do you think that God sees you as a good person?

If so, then answer these questions honestly and carefully:

1. Have you ever told a lie? Even if it was a little “white lie”.

2. Have you ever stolen anything? Regardless of the value of the item.

3. Have you ever used God’s name as a curse word or to express disgust?

4. Have you ever seen something that someone else had and thought, “I wish I had something like that. I wish I could afford the stuff they get.”

If you have done any of these things, then by your admissions, according to God’s standards, you are not a good person. And these are only 4 of the Ten Commandments, found in Exodus 20 in the old testament of the Bible!

So, if on Judgement Day, God judges you based on the 10 commandments, do you think you’re going to be found innocent or guilty? What a fearful thing to fall into the hands of a Living God!

Well, you say, “I’ve done more good things than bad in my life”. That doesn’t matter. If you were in a trial of court for commiting a crime, would the Judge let you off just because you had done many good things before the trial? No. He would still punish you for commiting the crime. That’s what the law would require.

By the same token, God will still punish you for breaking his law.

However, what if during that trial, what if someone you didn’t even know came into the court room and took the punishment for you so that you could be set free from the penalty of the crime?

That’s what Jesus Christ did for you when he was crucified 2000 or so years ago for your sins and for your transgression of God’s law. He took the punishment for you so that you wouldn’t have to be punished for your sins. All you have to do is accept God’s forgiveness by accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior!

So, before you go to bed tonight, why not get right with God today? You might not have another chance. You don’t know when your time on Earth is going to be up. And if you die in your sins without accepting God’s mercy, you’ll have to face the Judgement of God, and with your sins still in the books, there will be no hope on that great and terrible day. But you don’t have to die in your sins, and God doesn’t want you to, either. He is not willing that any perish, but rather, he wants all to come to repentance. So, why not get right with God now while you still have a chance?

If you want to make a decision to accept Jesus Christ as the atonement for your sins, then sincerely pray this prayer:

“God, I admit that I am a sinner and that I have broken your law. I realize that I am lost without God and that I’m headed towards a terrible judgement. However, God, today I confess my sins to you and I want to be right with you. I know that I alone cannot pay the debt that I owe for my sins. I believe with all my heart that your son, Jesus Christ, died on the cross to pay my sin debt for me, and I ask today that Jesus Christ be the Lord and Savior of my life, and I turn from my sins. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.” If you just prayed that prayer, and sincerely meant it, then you are now adopted into the Family of God, on your way to the splendor of heaven. To start out your Christian life, I would suggest that you pray to God, read your bible every day, and get into a good Bible-teaching Church.

::) Better late...

But before all that - hey Monty I found your Wikipedia entry - excellent stuff. Hope all well with you?

I progress at a fairly even rate into my second childhood!! :'( but that aside I can say that I still drift in and out of my recent Forum where I created my own thread named "For WinME Users Only" cos I was weary of reading the pointless put-downs of Millennium.
I guess I may link to it (the Forum i.e.) - it is quite reputable - http://forums.techguy.org/

My experiment in 'minimalism' as far as Security goes is over and this is what I wanted to share here:

A Final Word on Security.

First of all I DO NOT advocate the position I have taken regarding security.

For the past six months I have used my computer without the variety of anti-virus freeware (or software) and all other wares associated with security.

It maybe argued that my use of on line scanners constitutes a breach of the so-called minimalist position regarding security (this position is discussed by others in this thread and elsewhere in these forums) however I needed some assurance along the way. I am certainly not experienced enough to lay claim to being a 'true' minimalist.

I have kept - since the beginning - HijackThis and the MVP's Hosts file (read about that here). I regard these two tools as part of my maintenance routines which are daily events in my computing life. Something I enjoy.

I have been 'dismissed' from those forums (from which I learned the little I consider myself as knowing in the earlier years of my five on line - namely the Microsoft Community Newsgroups) for having trimmed Windows Millennium down to what was described, by a waggish habitue of those august(serious) groups as being, "nothing more than a version of Windows98". I can only hope this doesn't feed the fires that burn within the breasts of fervent Win98 users in these forums - and lead to a flood of comment in this thread!

Since the first week (Oct 2005), and reported in detail in the attached .txt file, I have found no malware (including viruses) in any of the on line scans I had have done.

So what have I concluded? About security.

It depends entirely on how we use our computers and for what. I do not need security and have no intention of reverting to the time when it seemed to be a must and occupied my thinking quite considerably. I am very happy to be free of the need for it. But remember that is me - not you. It is a very personal decision.

Cheers.

Ben.

And that's it.

Best wishes to all. [image] and for those who haven't found Monty's Wikipedia entry here is the way:

Do a Google search for 'Monty Barkers Computing Forum' and the first entry should be (is for me) User:Montybarker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - and you have it. Save it and it will always take you there. But this copy and paste from the page in a hyperlink doesn't:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Montybarker

Monty, perhaps you can explain that? :-[
